Pregnancy exercise

Andrea is a tough gal. After some initial nausea and low energy at the beginning, she's now into the second trimester, abusing her poor 12kg with regained strength. As her doc says, she is "so sturdy she can do whatever she wants" - like swing...

Or wrestle with this:

150 lb - it won't take her long to close it :)

Her husband is still rehabbing an injured shoulder, but he's doing fine with side presses and DL PttP-wise. We added some FMS-corrections into the mix now, too. I know the Brettzel's going to be his favorite ;)

Hi,Gabi !
Hmh, is there something going wrong in the KB-World ? I realize plenty of people have shoulder problems. But why ? Too much wrong snatches ? It sounds a little bit harsh but please understand I want to get healthier with KB Training and not thick. What do you find out for yourself ? You did some mistakes in your training ?

Best,
Rainer

Hey Gabi,
That's awesome work you're doing with your pregnant client. I've become more interested in those training modalities.

Sounds like your shoulder is still giving you fits. That sucks! Keep up your corrective work and don't hit the shoulders too hard. It's been working for me.

Rainer,

I can of course only speak for myself, but here's a couple of mistakes that I think can sneak in when you somehow believe general training rules only apply to your clients but not to you:

1. You didn't train for a while for whatever reason, or had something else in focus in your training, and when you return you think you don't need to ease into it again but can simply go from where you were before.

2. You temporarily forget you should be _practicing_ in the first place and instead you _work out_, that is, you go for higher numbers/heavier weights/whatever results (= you're muscling through where you should have stopped).

3. You loose patience and push it too fast "upwards" instead of widening your base. Like you want to jerk/snatch heavy but neglect TGUs/OH walk to build your supporting strength first.

A good thing I teach/demonstrate so much these days, I keep reminding myself, too :)

Jason,

since I have the Screen in my toolbox, I feel much more confident working with clients that are not "average". I have totally unconditioned, knee, spine or shoulder rehab, kids, pregnancy, obesity, the whole spectrum up to military guys and competitive martial artists. It's challenging and you have to be creative, but the Screen tells you where to start and which direction to go, and that makes things a whole lot simpler.

Shoulder-wise, I think it's my press that sucks. Whenever I think it's healed and start pressing again it gets worse, while snatches, TGU and other OH work don't seem to bother it. I hope I'll have a chance to get it checked at the Cert.

Pressing is a very tricky thing for me as well. Although its only been a few weeks, I have had success with pressing less each session (between 10 and 18 reps per arm) but more often (4 x per week). Also, I do my Z-Health everyday and this is also making a difference.

Very cool! Tell her that Yoana used KB's during he entire pregnancy!!!

Hope you are well!!

Franklin,

that was the best idea I could come up with, too, at least until I get my technique checked at the Cert next weekend. Low volume, light weight, high frequency: practicing.

That Z-thing must be something magic, I'm getting more and more intrigued as I see everybody is so crazy about it :)

Franz,

I certainly wanted to send her to Yoanas blog first thing but she found it by herself already :))

She really needs support from all possible sources... Except for her doc, everybody around her is upset by her working out and they try to frighten her by telling her all kind of horror stories. She's strong, mentally too, but it is still not easy.

Franz Snideman said...

that's unfortunate that people around her are not supporting her. Ignorance has a way of making people afraid. "We fear what we don't understand!"

I think the least quote was from one of the recent Batman movies!

Franz,

that's true. Ignorance is worse than ill will. So many common myths still alive, even among experts. But I'm positive: living examples work best, and the more of us there are, the faster we can spread :)

Hi Gabi,

Great video of your client. I am currently 6 months pregnant with my second child and truly enjoy keeping up with kettlebell workouts. It makes the pregnancy much more enjoyable to know that you can still workout and feel great! Thanks for sharing this!

Best,

Lauren
